A small political group in Texas is making headlines for its satirical ad aimed at the state governor Greg Abbott for his anti-abortion stance.

The committee, Mothers Against Greg Abbott, is taking a stand in response to the US supreme court decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

In the spot, viewers see a pregnant woman and her partner at the doctor’s office where they get the devasting news that their baby daughter has a catastrophic brain abnormality, meaning she will only live for a matter of hours after birth. As the couple digests the news, the doctor adds that a “decision will need to be made on termination” before turning to the wall and using a phone to call Abbott for his approval. “Yeah, that’s gonna be a no,” the doctor says as he gets off the phone. “Best of luck to you.”

At the time of writing, the video has racked up over 6.3m views on Twitter alone.

Mothers Against Greg Abbott started off as a one-woman protest that addressed the Texan’s policy failures, and includes a “diverse group of Democrats, Independents and Moderate Republicans working together for Texas families.“

A statement on its website reads: “For many of us, this fight isn’t about culture wars or Democrats v Republicans. This is about Texas families. Texas families have experienced so much since the beginning of Abbott’s tenure.

“We were abandoned in the Texas Freeze and made helpless when it came to protecting our kids and family from Covid. We refuse to put our heads in the sand for the passing of ’constitutional carry’ and abortion laws. We demand better governance. We deserve better than Greg Abbott and those that he surrounds himself with.”
