Google’s AI-led automobile has been involved in a crash on public roads, resulting in the injury of the vehicle's three passengers.

Google’s head of the project, Chris Urmson shared the news in a post on Medium on Thursday (16 July), adding that the latest accident was not the software’s fault.

Retelling details of the collision, Urmson announced that an intersection in Mountain View, California was the scene of the incident on 1 July.

He said: “The light was green, but traffic was backed up on the far side, so three cars, including ours, braked and came to a stop so as not to get stuck in the middle of the intersection.

"After we'd stopped, a car slammed into the back of us at 17 mph - and it hadn't braked at all."

Releasing a monthly transparency report, Google’s vehicles have travelled over 1.8 million miles since testing first commenced.
