Today is Juneteenth, the US holiday marking the day in 1865 when Union troops enforced the emancipation of Black slaves.
Celebrating this historic day in a lighthearted way is the creative agency Mother New York, which has just debuted ‘Auntie Whine,’ a new campaign named after the way aunties “whine” their hips after a few drinks at family gatherings.
Perfectly timed to cookout season, Auntie Whine includes a limited-edition wine and a groovy playlist to celebrate the aunties in our lives and their signature dance moves.
The wine itself captures the spirit of auntiehood, with “notes of cocoa butter” and “a mouthfeel as smooth as a silk bonnet,” as the agency describes it. To launch the wine, a playful video showcases its delightful bottle design.
The ‘Auntie Whine’ playlist, available to stream on Spotify, includes Jamaican dancehall and reggae artists like Serani, Chaka Demus & Pliers and Gyptian.

According to Penelope Vasquez, a creative at Mother New York, whining is a type of dance based on the movement of the waist and hips in Caribbean Black culture. She explains: “Whining is both subtle and sensual, just like how your favorite auntie might dance while holding a glass of her favorite wine.”
Vasquez also highlights the connection between Juneteenth and aunties. “Aunties are an important part of Black families and the community. Whether they’re actually aunts or just give off ‘auntie vibes,’ they bring fun, personality and warmth to family and community gatherings, many of which happen throughout the summer.”
